ROG will assist children and youth in reclaiming their greatness in agency, academic achievement, work force success, and physical prowess

About this program

Opportunity for Youth Program

Youth outcomes will not change for the better without interventions that prioritize creating connections that allow them to create meaning for their lives. With its Opportunity for YouthProgram (OYP), ROG will assist children and youth in reclaiming their greatness in agency, academic achievement, work force success, and physical prowess.

Trauma Informed Care

ROG’s OYP provides young children with realistic dreams far beyond their expectations including access to high    paying careers in growth fields like data analytics.

Agency will be built by helping children and youth foster those connections by supporting them through thoughtful case management implemented by case managers who are experienced in caring for at-risk youth.

Case managers at ROG receive regular trauma-informed training to prevent exacerbation of the already present traumas of our youth. They provide a range of support services address poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, or mental health issues. The overseeing manager, the executive director, and support staff work together as a team to identify youth needs and develop individualized plans to address them.

Tutoring

One key component of our OYP is after school tutoring in specific subjects. ROG tutors are trained on providing culturally responsive tutoring. Our tutors will meet students where they are atin their academic progress and help build their confidence.

Work Force Preparation

Another component of the OYP are workshops that respond to the technological demands of the digital economy. With the many opportunities in technology around Seattle, we plan on tapping into community liaisons who own businesses, nonprofits, and youth advocacy groups to give the best tech training and career counseling to our youth. For example, there are tremendous opportunities right now for children to grow into successful careers in growing fields like data analytics if only they get the training they need in mathematics, computer science, and statistics.

Younger students, for example, can benefit from exposure to a Google software program called Grasshopper. This isa free coding app for beginners. Students in the OYP program will have an opportunity to easily learn and understand coding without any previous experience. In as little as 20 minutes a day, they can complete lessons, quizzes and visual puzzles to build their coding skills. With the help of tutors, they will move through progressively challenging levels as they develop their abilities, then graduate with fundamental programming skills for their next step as a coder.

Older students will benefit from access to Coding for Kids which develops highly in demand coding skills for youth. After only 12 weeks of training, they can begin seeking high paying job sin the technology field. Compared to other occupations, the demand for BIPOC employees with skills in data analytics is projected to be two times larger than the supply of workers in this field.

Recreation and Sports

OYP will begin offering youth the opportunity practice basketball in ROG’s Queen Anne basketball gym. Our training program will emphasize a balance between fun, fitness, psychological well-being, and lifelong lessons for a healthy and active. The program will support students who will be scholars and athletes who are well-prepared to enter college.

ROG’s OYP recreation and sports program is led by Jasen Baskett. Coach Baskett has trained NBA players such as Jason Terry, Rodney Stuckey, Spencer Hawes, Isaiah Thomas, Hiram Fuller, and Vladmir Stepanov.

Former head coach and founder of Seattle’s premier basketball club, Jasen Baskett, will oversee the entirety of the basketball recreation program. Coach Baskett formed The Emerald City Basketball Club at a time when there were no other year-round basketball training clubs. His visionary approach to athletics, based on his research into biokinetics in his college years and supported by his thesis on the proper way to shoot a basketball, has produced athletes who excel in a variety of areas.

He has trained and coached hundreds of players that went on to receive either Division I, II, III or NationalAssociation of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) basketball scholarships and financial aid packages. Coach Baskett trained Marshaun during her high school basketall career and taught her that hard work put in everyday builds the skills necessary for success. They will instill the same message to the OYP program youth in the Queen Anne gym, the same one Marshaun first learned to play basketball with Coach Baskett.

The individual coaches who participate in the OYP program will include individuals who have been mentored by Coach Baskett and who have achieved both athletic and academic success.
